The La Liga Policy Institute (LLPI) yesterday urged for the immediate cessation of hostilities in Mindanao and called for the resumption of peace negotiations between the Philippine government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF)."It is our firm belief that lasting peace in Mindanao can only be achieved if we as a nation recognize and uphold the rights and long standing struggle of our Muslim countrymen," the LLPI said in a statement. "La Liga believes that as long as there is violence and bloodshed in Mindanao, a holistic socio-political and economic development in Mindanao would never be achieved," it added. La Liga said that the economic and social costs of the war in Mindanao are staggering. It said that according to the Philippine Human Development Report in 2005, 91 percent of all provinces in the region have been affected by ideology-based armed conflicts during the 18-year period from 1986-2004. Romero, Abs-cbnNEWS.com/Newsbreak | 11/06/2008 6:14 PM The Department of Agriculture (DA) has launched the first phase of its Organic FIELDS Support Program (OFSP Phase I) which adopts a three-pronged strategy to steer the local agricultural industry to organic farming. Organic farming cuts the dependence on chemical pesticides and fertilizers as it uses agricultural waste, compost and crop rotation to increase soil productivity. In a memorandum of agreement with Go Organic! Movement, a campaign startedby local people’s organizations (PO) in August 2008, the DA allotted P20 million for the initial stage of OFSP which would be implemented in Albay, Bataan, Camarines Sur, Nueva Ecija, Oriental Mindoro and Pangasinan from November 2008-March 2009.
